PERFORMANCE STATISTICS/JOB OUTLOOK

According to the 2008-2009 Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the U.S. Department of Labor, overall employment of barbers and cosmetologists is expected to grow 14 percent which is considered faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2016 because of increasing population and the growing demand for cosmetology services. Opportunities will be better for those licensed to provide a broad range of services.
In January 2007, there were 1,682,641 professionals employed in the nation’s 370,215 beauty salons, barber shops, skin care salons, and nail salons. The number of salons has increased by 57,256 or 18.3%, during the past three years. North Dakota currently employs professionals in 2,006 salons across the state. North Dakota’s typical salon is a small full service salon with 7 or 8 workstations that welcomes an average of 154 clients per week. The salon industry in North Dakota h is a job-seekers market today, with over 56% of the salon owners reporting at least one or two job openings available immediately. Even though 484,660 salon career positions were filled nationally in 2006, a majority of salon owners across America reported that they still had job openings.
Nationally, 58% of salons are classified as ‘full-service’, while 17% are haircutting only salons, the remaining 25% are specialized shops not listed. 63% of Utah salon owners classify their businesses as a ‘full-service salon’, 17% as a haircutting salon, and 7% as a nail salon. 50% of North Dakota salon professionals work full-time, 33% are part-time (20-35 hours) and 17% are low-time with less than 20 hours worked per week. Nationally, 56% of salon employees now work full-time, and 44% are part-time, nationally. The average income for a salon professional in North Dakota and in America today is $30,000 to $48,000 per year. By this latest 2003 research, the corresponding 2002 yearly full-time salaries were $53, 150 for salon owners and $36,100 for all other salon professionals across the USA. The exciting news is that salon earning power keeps improving!
